Description
This is my vision of how "The Roundtop Filling Station" of North Little Rock might have looked in the 1940's. The station was build in 1936 on the old Arkansas Highway 67. Many travelers across Arkansas stopped at this gas station because it had the only public restroom between Bald know and Little Rock. There have been reports that many Arkansas celebrities including Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty stopped in for a soda or gas. It provided gas and oil from different oil companies over the years such as Phillips 66, Sinclair, and Sunoco. The station closed in 1981 after it's owner "Happy" decided to retire. I had the pleasure of meeting this man and remember how fondly he reminisced about his time at this iconic gas station. It has been restored and stands as a reminder of simpler times. The gas station is a landmark that is also on the "National Register of Historical Places". This painting is dedicated to the two men that nagged me for years to paint a picture of this unique landmark, Benny Kidd and Gary Cook.
